Naoto Kawate performs solo guitar with his thumbs and fingers as his pals.
He combines alcoholesque guitar with mischievousness in his imperfectly
formed miniatures. He also plays rhythm guitar for Maher Shalal Hash
Baz and is a co-founder of Priblic, a project for alternative arts.

The Balky Mule (Fat Cat Records) Blends and bends bootsale casio, rough
hewn guitar chords and considered lyrics in a post-Peel songwriting style.
The core of this group is Sa! m Jones, previously of Bristol bands Movietone
and Crescent, now more often assisted by fingers and thumbs from further
afield…

Clubhouse

Clubhouse was launched in March 2010 by artists Irene Murphy and Claire Guerin. It is a weekly open day in the Guesthouse every Tuesday running from 11:00 – 16:00. It was initiated to give viewing time of the space and to allow guests to appear unannounced, use the internet and perhaps talk about upcoming projects. All are welcome.

At the moment Clubhouse is hosting a Lacan reading group every Tuesday organized by The Cork Artist Collective’s Colette Nolan. And the reading group runs from 15:00-17:00. There has been a recent demand for more reading groups on various subjects and we are open to more suggestions. The attendants of the reading group are currently a mixture of local artists interested in learning more about Lacan and three practicing Psychiatrists who are interested exploring the texts in discussion.

Safehouse was an event in April 2009, organized by Claire Guerin and noise artist and writer Paul Hegarty (S.A.F.E). African music lecturer Tony Langlois was selected to give a talk about the event and you can watch a montage of Tony’s speech/talk with a blast of the noise heard on the day on the clips below. Sound Eye is an annual poetry festival in Cork city organized by Trevor Joyce and Fergal Gaynor. This is from Sound Eye 2008 when the Guest House project hosted the event for an afternoon (Documentation by Claire Guerin).

In June 2008 New York poet Kennith Goldsmith was in residence in the Guesthouse, in collaboration with the Guesthouse and Soundeye. You can view his online artist archive UBU at www.ubu.com and watch the video on his work ‘chewing on words’ in the video section under Kennith Goldsmith, I highly recommend it.

In 2008 Irene Murphy and myself (Claire Guerin) hosted over 50 Tuesday Lunch events. With the help of a different main host chef each week, our working lunch naturally formed into a mini event. I am still going through all the documentation video, photo and sound recordings of the different happenings. The happenings changed each week, depending on who we had in the residency space… who volunteered… and who was in Cork at the time. Lunch was there to create a casual space for artists to meet, and perhaps see some work that they wouldn’t normally see anywhere else in the city. Everyone who attended lunch contributed and were a part of this initiative (even if they were unaware of it). Every guest brought an item of their choice for the larder… and lunch was free of charge.

When we shot the Juza video we had a student called Nail O’Brien on work experience with us from St Johns College, and he helped with filming and editing during that period.
