SYNTAX REVEALED: NEW WORKS BY DERMOT BROWNE: FEB 22 – MAR 23 2010
Thu, 4/03/10 – 11:51 | No Comment

Much of my work to date has been variations on modern expressions of what painting can be about. My works are largely abstract in nature, but have incleasingly included both figuerative elements and spaces.

This exhibition is largely about spaces. The works are situated in what is essentially a domestic space, in a real street, in a real town. What I have sought to do, is to situate these small paintings firmly in the context of this room. To tie them to the space, I have painted large sections of the walls with a number of household colours. The shapes and forms which these areas take, also relate back to elements within the paintings. In this way, I hope to have “exploded” the meaning of what a painting ( or these paintings ) can be be about.

This explosions or projection, or extention of the works is always very important within my practice. In this circumstance it has allowed me to really creat one work throughout the whole room. There is a definite attempt to try to encompass the viewer in a full installational experience. But it is also hoped that the individual works can tehn be interacted with on a more personal level.

This moving between the actual works and the painted room, blurs the edges of where the works start and finish. A painted wall has a different visual intensity, than an actual fine art painting. But yet both are related. Design meets high art practice, both working at different levels. This is emphasised with the quotes from Carlos Castaneda, and the projection, “explosion” of the works, is re-quoted in the use of images of the work of Angela Fulcher, also recently shown at the GuestHouse.
